Poet Marie Howe is coming to Los Angeles

Laurie Wagner lives in the Bay Area where she is a writer and a teacher. She also produces a traveling writer's series where she brings writers - mostly poets - to her home in Northern Cal. to teach.

She is a friend of Marie Howe's and is producing a really wonderful, intimate workshop for her in L.A. on February 15th, 2013. It's a Friday - the workshop will be at her Mom's house in West L.A. She thinks they're going to limit the group to 15 people.

She doesn't have as many contacts here in L.A. in the poetry/writing community and everyone tells her that she needs to connect with Beyond Baroque if she wants to connect to the epicenter of L.A. poetry. She needs to spread the word about the workshop so that 15 lucky people can find out about it.

The cost is $150 for the day 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM - and a chance to work intimately with Marie - one of the best poets and teachers that we know.

The link on Marie's website gives more details:

http://www.27powers.org/marie-howe/

Please pass this note on to anyone who you think would want to know about the workshop and perhaps even come. We'd so appreciate that.

Thank you!

RUDIMENTS FOR RHYTHM AND WORDS WORKSHOP

New youth workshop for High School students and young adults added!

An introduction to rudiments and rhythm with poet A. K. Toney and musician Alfredo Rivera.

This workshop is designed to assist youth poets and storytellers with presentation using musical accompaniments.  It will assist the student poets by allowing them to effectively communicate with the musician that will perform with them.  Using the tools of memorization, timing, and basic chord theory, student poets will obtain a modest comprehension of call and response with performing in front of audiences.  Thus allowing students to expand their knowledge musically and elevate their writing, giving it liberty on stage as well as on the page for readers and listeners.  More importantly, this process is designed to make poetry sound well crafted, profound and give ambiance when performing through a musical medium.

When: July 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th

Time: 10-12pm, Saturdays

Where: Beyond Baroque 681 Venice Bl. Venice, CA 90291
Only taking 20 students

"USED WITH DECEIT", JEFF & GORDON AT BEYOND BAROQUE

Artist Duo JEFF&GORDON present new video and sculptural work plus a performance at Beyond Baroque Literary/Arts Center, Venice, CA

Reception: Saturday, May 5, 2012, 5-8 pm
( ( ( ( Performance at 6:30 pm ) ) ) )
Exhibition: May 5 to May 21, 2012

Open Friday 11 am - 6 pm, Saturday & others by appointment
____________________________________________________________

What's in a name? That which we call a NASCAR driver by a slightly different name would be an artist group. Such is the case with JEFF&GORDON, the artist duo comprised of Jeff Foye and Gordon Winiemko; and Jeff Gordon, the charismatic NASCAR driver (#24). The ampersand—the symbol for the Latin word for “and”—is all that separates the artist duo from the driver. Such a small detail can be easily overlooked, or so it would seem by the number of Jeff Gordon NASCAR fans who mistakenly “like” the artists’ Facebook page. Used with Deceit examines public identity and fan culture; JEFF&GORDON has taken these incidents of mistaken online identity as a point of departure, appropriating Jeff Gordon Youtube videos posted by fans and altering them in various ways to conflate the artists with the titular subject. Into NASCAR video game footage featuring Jeff Gordon's car, the artists insert themselves driving around the block multiple times in defiance of a "no vehicular cruising" law; into a clip of the race car driver and his mother cooking with a family recipe on the Rachael Ray show, they insert themselves having a curious encounter with a fried egg; into a fan video of Jeff Gordon winning a race, they insert themselves performing everyday tasks while wearing identical Jeff Gordon masks. JEFF&GORDON will ultimately deposit these (and more) clips back onto Youtube; this exhibition will be their public premiere.

Beyond Baroque is one of southern California’s leading literary/arts centers. It houses a theater, an art gallery and a bookstore specializing in poetry and alternative writing (the perfect venue for an exhibition that examines the ampersand). The center is based in Venice’s former town hall; the building has a long history of community interaction and JEFF&GORDON will tie all of Beyond Baroque’s areas of interest together with one exhibition including sculpture, video installation and a performance in the center’s theater on the evening of the opening.

Winiemko further explains the group’s inspiration for this new work: “Being mistaken for Jeff Gordon [the driver] on Facebook pointed us towards working with the arbitrariness of identity. We just happen to be mistaken with a race car driver. And in this 15-minutes-of-fame world, who gets to use the identity of Jeff? And Gordon? And JEFF&GORDON?”

7 April, Saturday - 3:00 PM  KABLOOIE!!! ART SHOW OPENING AND RECEPTION: RECENT WORK BY ROBERT BRANAMAN AND TODD A. SMITH

Art Show runs through Monday, April 30, 2012 in our upstairs Mike Kelley Gallery.
Open Friday 11 am - 6 pm, Saturday & others by appointment.
FREE Admission.

ROBERT BRANAMAN's tremendous body of work includes etchings, paintings, films, books and most recently a series of limited edition digital/traditional prints. Bob was one of the innovative artists showing at the legendary Batman Gallery in San Francisco and was part of Michael McClure’s play !The Feast! performed there. His paintings were prominently featured in Oliver Stone’s film The Doors. His films include Ginsberg (1966) and Goldmouth (1965), starring LAWRENCE FERLINGHETTI. He presently lives and works in Santa Monica.

A graduate of CSULB with an MFA in Studio Art, TODD A. SMITH constructs faux books made from wood that address aspects of popular culture, history, science and religion. His creative process begins with an idea that he gleans from personal experiences and interactions with radio, television, books and pop culture. He transforms these ideas into book titles and screen-prints them onto wooden books. Todd places some of these books in libraries; some are transformed into “pop-ups” while others are constructed into columns or small “still-life’s.” Todd also has a series of drawings and prints that expand on the transitory nature of the traditional book and what its content has to offer in the way of knowledge and imagination.

"Mother Earth", a special serigraph series of four different landscapes and earthly delights and insights hand-made by ROBERT BRANAMAN, will be available for $25 each at the reception on April 7th.

May 6, 2012 at 3:00pm - BEYOND BAROQUE ART AUCTION

You are invited to attend our upcoming first-ever art auction. Please spread the word and invite your friends and interested art collectors you might know!

Beyond Baroque, Venice's literary/arts center, will hold its first-ever benefit art auction on Sunday, May 6th. Works by over 25 of Los Angeles' most prominent artists will be featured.
The artists, all of whom have donated their works, include Ed Ruscha, Gronk, Raymond Pettibon, George Herms, Viggo Mortensen and Robbie Conal.    Proceeds  will  support  Beyond Baroque's program of new and experimental music, "Beyond Music."

The event will open at 3 p.m.  Works on sale will be on view for an hour, accompanied by new music performance in the Poetry Garden by renowned saxophonist Ulrich Krieger.  The auction will commence at 4 p.m., and will be conducted by Robert Berman.
Following the auction, the Mike Kelley Gallery will be dedicated at Beyond Baroque.

"We are deeply grateful to the contributing artists," commented Bob Branaman, curator of the event.  "This landmark auction not only provides great opportunities for art buyers, it represents
a major interaction between the arts."
Beyond Baroque is located at 681 Venice Blvd, Venice (in the former Venice City Hall).  Admission to the auction is free, and refreshments will be served.
Beyond Baroque is one of America's oldest and largest independent literary/arts centers.
Founded in 1968, its  black  box  theater  has  presented  many of the nation's foremost poets and writers. Its free Wednesday night poetry workshop has been held continuously for the past 41 years, and its archives contain some 40,000 volumes--a history of literary Los Angeles.
The monthly "Beyond Music" series, curated by composer Daniel Rothman, began in 2010 and has  been praised in the L.A. Times for presenting musically innovative local, national and international composers and performers.
