Starting tomorrow on February, 6th 2012 at 7PM:

Yago Cura, publisher of the online journal Hinchas de Poesia (www.hinchasdepoesia.com), will serve as facilitator of the free workshops. Each session will address the work of a different 20th Century Latin American poet, and allow students to generate a piece inspired by some of their signature poems.

The class will be taught in English but the poems Yago Cura uses will be read in Spanish and English.

Afterwards, there will be a screening of one of Scott's favorite films, Budd Boetticher's iconic western 7 Men From Now starring RANDOLPH SCOTT, GAIL RUSSELL and LEE MARVIN. Free popcorn.

A largely unsung hero while he was here, Scott was a long playing heart beat atDutton's Books in Brentwood. A big man, Scott was and is one of the most original, vital voices in American verse. He never met a soul he didn't touch.
Born February 20, 1953 in Santa Monica, sadly, Scott passed away very suddenly August 19, 2011 in Florence, Oregon.
Come help us celebrate his work and bring him home on what would've been Scott's 59th birthday.

BEYOND MUSIC, curated and hosted by Daniel Rothman, is an innovative series promoting music specifically of genres outside (beyond) those that are more commonly heard at commercial venues, such as clubs.
Although it is primarily a curated series, proposals may be submitted by sending a CD accompanied by a description of performers and technical requirements to Beyond Music at Beyond Baroque at 681 Venice Blvd., Venice, CA 90291.

Beyond Baroque appreciates proposals it receives from composers and performers; however, please be advised that limited series dates for the current season and dates already scheduled for future seasons prevent Beyond Music from programming everything of interest.

Goodman's prolific career as a “professional outsider”was an uninhibited articulation of the diminishing democratic voice in Post World War-II America. His incessant publishing of philosophical, sociological and psychological texts, along with a large body of fiction and poetry, provide a glimpse into the accelerating unrest of the 40's and 50's. His political impact culminated in Absurd's publication in 1960, after which Goodman, exhausted by the tumultuous excess of 60's culture, faded into obscurity. In his prime, an advocate for massive education reform, a passionate poet, a radical urban planner and an anarchist steeped in classical western tradition. “I suspect that as a person, he's not very well remembered” said Noam Chomsky, “but his impact is all around us.”

Beat historian GERALD NICOSIA spent years looking for LU ANNE HENDERSON, the woman who started JACK KEROUAC and NEAL CASSADY on their journey, because he knew that if not for her, the two men wouldn’t have taken the road trip that became On the Road. With the help of Lu Anne’s daughter Anne Marie Santos, Nicosia tells the story of the beautiful 15-year-old girl who loved both men, and taught them how to love each other, in ONE AND ONLY: The Untold Story of On The Road, being published by Viva Editions in November.

Nicosia had interviewed Henderson in 1978, when she was 47 and he was just in his early 20s, and though he said “a lot of Lu Anne was beyond me then,” he understood what a great gift she had given him. She had long strenuously avoided the spotlight—Nicosia only found her through an off-hand comment from a fellow Beat aficionado—and she quickly dropped out of sight again after they spoke. As the author of Memory Babe, widely regarded as the definitive work on JACK KEROUAC, he alone recognized her secret impact on 20th century literature. ONE AND ONLY includes the never-before-published transcription of the 34,000-word taped interview and is illustrated with fifty-five rare archival black-and-white photographs, including priceless pictures of NEAL CASSADY and JACK KEROUAC, ALAN GINSBERG and others, many of which have never before been seen.

Viva Editions Associate Publisher Brenda Knight, herself a Beat scholar and author of Women of the Beat Generation, winner of the 1997 American Book Award, said, “There are many ‘Beat bombshells’ of new information. This book will be controversial and a major contribution to the oeuvre. People will read it alongside On the Road, scene by scene.”
The book will be published in November, to coincide with the release of the long-awaited WALTER SALLES movie of On the Road later this fall, in which KRISTEN STEWART will portray Marylou, the character based on Lu Anne Henderson. The actors starring in the film weren’t born when On the Road was published. To educate them, Director Salles created “Beat boot camp,” enlisting ONE AND ONLY authorGERALD NICOSIA as the first instructor.
Lu Anne has routinely been portrayed as a teenage slut, which is how she came off in Carolyn Cassady’s memoir Heart Beat, made into a major movie in 1980. Finally, in ONE AND ONLY, we see Henderson as astutely sensitive and keenly observant about her own life, that of her friends, and the human condition. In preparing for her role, KRISTEN STEWART was having a hard time making sense of how Lu Anne could still love Neal, despite his endless cheating on her. After listening to the taped interview that is at the heart of ONE AND ONLY, Kristen said she found the key to playing Marylou in the movie “as her own woman, not Neal’s.”
At last, through the indefatigable research of GERALD NICOSIA, we meet the real woman who sparked a literary revolution—in effect, making the Beat Generation possible, as well as giving Kerouac the material for On the Road.

CLAYTON ESHLEMAN ON AIME CÉSAIRE

CLAYTON ESHLEMAN will be reading from his co-translations of the unexpurgated 1948 edition of AIME CÉSAIRE'S Solar Throat Slashed, recently published by Wesleyan University Press.
CLAYTON ESHLEMAN has been at the heart of American poetry since the early 1960's. His poems, critical essays, and translations of poets as important and diverse as CÉSAR VALLEJO, AIME CÉSAIRE, PABLO NERUDA, ANTONIN ARTAUD, VLADIMIR HOLAN, HENRI MICHAUX, and BERNARD BADOR have earned him (and his fellow co-translators in some cases) international acclaim, as testified by a US National Book Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, numerous grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities, and two Landon Translation Prizes from the Academy of American Poets. In 1994, he was a fellow at the Rockefeller Study Center in Bellagio, Italy, where he wrote a 50 page poem on HIERONYMUS BOSCH'S The Garden of Earthly Delights.
Eshleman was also the founder and editor of two of the most important literary journals in the latter half of the 20th century: Caterpillar (1967-1973, 20 issues) and Sulfur (1981-2000, 46 issues). During his career he has published over forty books, including, between 2000 and 2007, the following: three collections of poetry—My Devotion, An Alchemist with One Eye on Fire, and Reciprocal Distillations; three translations—AIME CÉSAIRE'S Notebook of a Return to the Native Land, a second edition (with many new texts) of his “selected translations,” Conductors of the Pit, and The Complete Poetry of César Vallejo; and three collections of prose—Companion Spider, Archaic Design, and Juniper Fuse: Upper Paleolithic Imagination & the Construction of the Underworld. This last title is a groundbreaking collection of poetry and prose that is the culmination of Eshleman's twenty-five years of research into the origins of image-making via the Ice Age painted caves of southwestern France. In 2008, Black Widow Press in Boston brought out a 630-page Clayton Eshleman Reader, The Grindstone of Rapport, collecting 40 years of poetry, prose, and translations. A new collection of poetry, Anticline, appeared in the spring of 2010.
Eshleman continues to live in Ypsilanti, Michigan, a Professor Emeritus at Eastern Michigan University, with his wife Caryl, who for forty years has been his editor and who for nineteen years was the Managing Editor of Sulfur magazine.

At age 22, MICHAEL MCCLURE gave his first poetry reading at the legendary Six Gallery event in San Francisco, where ALLEN GINSBERG first read Howl. Today, McClure is more active than ever, writing and performing his poetry at festivals, and colleges and clubs across the country.
“The role model for JIM MORRISON,” as the Los Angeles Times characterized MICHAEL MCCLURE, has found sources in music from THELONIOUS MONK and MILES DAVIS to the composer TERRY RILEY with whom his poetry performances frequently share a bill and with whom he created a CD titled I Like Your Eyes Liberty. The CD explores spontaneous music and voice (working together) expressing the outrageous and mystical in both artists.
McClure has worked extensively with his old friend RAY MANZAREK, THE DOORS' keyboardist, at festivals and colleges and clubs. They appeared with saxophonist DAVID SANBORN on NBC-TV performing a jazz version of McClure's Love Lion Blues. Mystic Fire released a 70-minute video of the duo and a compact disk Love Lion followed. McClure and Manzarek's second CD carries on their explorations. Third Mind, a film of Michael and Ray's conversations and performances, was premiered by the Sun Dance Channel.
McClure reads with an actor's command and a singer's timing, his impact “transports audiences to a very different and intriguing place.” He has given hundreds of reading in venues as varied as the Fillmore Ballroom, Yale University, Stanford, The National Biodiversity Conference at the Smithsonian, and the Library of Congress. His audiences have ranged from an intimate dozen at a tiny Maui bookstore, to tens of thousands at San Francisco's Human Be-in in San Francisco, and to multitudes at Airlift Africa. One of the poet's readings was to, and with, four lions at the San Francisco Zoo - a film of it is sometimes shown on TV. McClure's world-wide performances include Rome, Paris, Tokyo, Lawrence, Kansas, London, a bull ring in Mexico City, The Whitney Museum, and a steam room in Nairobi for a group of African businessmen.
A reviewer of a recent London reading wrote, “McClure's West Coast delivery was deliberate, cool, spacious…” The Journal-World in Lawrence, Kansas offered these observations of McClure at the WILLIAM BURROUGHS celebration, “McClure looked cool. Yet he grew warm, wending lyrical words around the air and across the hall. The coolness fell away with his simple elegance in word and presentation… McClure was controlled and read with steady jazz rhythms, a perfect, minimal chart of spoken words.”
He has received numerous awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, an Obie Award for Best Play, an NEA grant, the Alfred Jarry Award, and a Rockefeller grant for playwriting. McClure has written twenty plays and musicals, which are performed in the U.S. and abroad. His play The Beard provoked numerous censorship battles. In Los Angeles the cast was arrested after each performance for fourteen nights in a row. Later The Beard received two Obies in N.Y.C. and was warmly embraced in both London and Paris. The play has played a role in U.S. censorship and free speech battles since1966 when it won the first lawsuit.
The poet is featured in Scorcese's Last Waltz, in which his reading of a poem by Chaucer “lilted, rolled, and seduced the audience into the lyric tonality of Middle English” (Atlanta Poetry Review). McClure played a Hells Angel in NORMAN MAILER'S film Beyond the Law. He had a cameo in PETER FONDA'S Hired Hand. McClure has made two television documentaries - The Maze and September Blackberries. His many books of poetry include Jaguar Skies, Dark Brown, Huge Dreams, Rebel Lions, Rain Mirror, andPlum Stones. He has published eight books of plays and four collections of essays, including essays on BOB DYLAN and on environmental issues. His novels are The Mad Cub and The Adept.
McClure's songs include “Mercedes Benz,” popularized by JANIS JOPLIN and new songs, which are being performed by The Twenty-first Century Doors.
His journalism has been featured in The Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, and the L.A. Times and San Francisco Chronicle.
MICHAEL MCCLURE'S travels include Africa, Mexico, South America, India, Thailand, and Japan. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area hills with his wife, the sculptor AMY EVANS MCCLURE.

MICHAEL C. FORD was born on the Illinois side of Lake Michigan. His debut spoken word vinyl LANGUAGE COMMANDO earned a Grammy nomination in 1986. His book of Selected Poems EMERGENCY EXITS was honored by a 1998 Pulitzer Prize nomination. His last CD FIRE ESCAPES was produced at Sonora by Michael Campagna who also composed and orchestrated most of the charts. He concluded a recording project, a verbal rhapsody, which pays an important tribute to both the art and the history of percussion and collaborating with THE DOORS co-founder JOHN DENSMORE at the drum kit. MICHAEL C. FORD has participated in keeping THE DOORS open by occasionally being in the company of keyboardist RAY MANZAREK. Since their milestone appearances at McCabe’s (1986-1989), they’ve been collaborating on several voice and piano recording dates, the most recent track titled EXTREME UNCTION FOR JAMES DOUGLAS MORRISON for Hen House Studios anthology Vol. 4. Besides publishing music journalism and essays on other aspects of American cultural history, he’s served as judge and panelist for literary arts organizations and publishers. Ford’s plays have been staged internationally, and a screenplay version of a West Coast production of BLONDES DON’T BOTHER TO KNOCK is currently in production. He’s been called into service to teach in USA county area middle-schools and high-schools through the PEN in the Classroom program and to recite at various venues, many times with musical accompaniment.

One of Southern California’s most popular community events—the annual ABBOT KINNEY FESTIVAL now in its 27th year—will be held in Venice on Sunday, Sept. 25th, 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The free festival, which leads along the one-mile stretch of Abbot Kinney Blvd. from Venice Blvd. to Main St. in Venice, features local artisans, live music, and family entertainment.

GAYLE BRANDEIS is the author of Fruitflesh: Seeds of Inspiration for Women Who Write (HarperOne), Dictionary Poems (Pudding House Publications), the novels The Book of Dead Birds (HarperCollins), which won Barbara Kingsolver's Bellwether Prize for Fiction in Support of a Literature of Social Change, Self Storage (Ballantine) and Delta Girls (Ballantine), and her first novel for young readers, My Life with the Lincolns (Holt). Gayle's poetry, fiction, and essays have appeared in numerous magazines and anthologies (such as Salon.com, The Nation, and The Mississippi Review) and have received several awards, including the QPB/Story Magazine Short Story Award, a Barbara Mandigo Kelley Peace Poetry Award, and a grant from the Barbara Deming Memorial Fund. Her essay on the meaning of liberty was one of three included in the Statue of Liberty’s Centennial time capsule in 1986, when she was 18. In 2004, the Writer Magazine honored Gayle with a Writer Who Makes a Difference Award. Gayle holds a BA in Poetry and Movement: Arts of Expression, Meditation and Healing from the University of Redlands, and an MFA in Creative Writing/Fiction from Antioch University. She currently teaches at Antioch and has taught at universities, libraries, community centers, and writing conferences around the country; she is also on the national staff of the women's peace organization CODEPINK and is a founding member of the Women Creating Peace Collective. Gayle lives in Riverside, CA and has a son in college, a daughter in high school, and a one year old boy.

LAUREL ANN BOGEN was born in Los Angeles and has lived within twenty miles of the hospital that spawned her for her entire life. She is the author of ten books of poetry and short fiction the most recent of which is Washing a Language published by Red Hen Press, which will also be publishing her New and Collected Poems. She teaches in the Writers' Program at UCLA Extension where she received the Outstanding Instructor of the Year Award in 2008. Her work has been published in more than 100 literary magazines and anthologies.

HELENA LIPSTADTis the author of two chapbooks, Leave Me Signs and If My Heart Were A Desert. Leave Me Signs was written during a residency at Arad Arts Project in Arad, Israel. Her work has appeared in Bridges, Lilith, Sinister Wisdom, among others. She lives in Los Angeles.

BEYOND MUSIC: SCOTT FOSTER HARRIS OF ZEN RIZING

Music with integrity. This concept in and of itself holds the answers to the ongoing crusades seeking to discover the secrets of timeless art. If only everyone shared this ideal, there would be no ‘plastic’ music. Such is the case with SCOTT FOSTER HARRIS who is enthusiastic about the fact that he can share his songs during his acoustic gig with you tonight at our venue.
Scott discovered the musical facet of his soul at the age of nineteen. While healing from an injury he sustained as a rodeo bull rider, Scott became completely and utterly obsessed with music and poetry along with a variety of other creative avenues. Temporarily unable to ride, he began an entirely different venture with unrestrained and unapologetic enthusiasm consisting of teaching himself to play multiple instruments and, almost immediately, writing songs.
Briefly, Scott toured Texas and Oklahoma as a singer/songwriter. He then moved to Nashville to pursue a career as a writer where he landed a publishing deal with Amylase Music; his earliest songs were cut by artists such as STEPHEN COCHRAN, TODD O’NEIL, and VINNY VAN ZANT of TRAILER CHOIR. After leaving Amylase, Scott began recording and performing with the band SEVENTY SEVEN. However, within a few months he grew restless to create and perform his own music thus beginning his search for musicians who would share his vision. One by one he put his band ZEN RIZING together and shortly there-after moved them all out to LA to pursue their kind of music. Having been on the West Coast for little more than two years they’ve already accomplished such feats as winning an LA Music Award for ‘Rock Single Of The Year’ for their tune“Heaven In Your Eyes”, establishing a residency at the Whisky A Go Go, and becoming regular fixtures on such stages as The House Of Blues and The Roxy.
Scott and his band ZEN RIZING just recently announced that they will open for RAY MANZAREK and ROBBY KRIEGER of THE DOORS on 8/19 at the Whisky A Go Go. More info on this and all upcoming shows etc. can be found on ZEN RIZING's website at http://www.zenrizing.com/.

Paddy is pleased to host a rare evening with two of Los Angeles’ finest and most intensely original voices. She will be joined by poet STEVE ABEE and singer/songwriter ROD SMEAR who have been hooking loyal listeners for years with the power of their words and rhythms. Come and get hooked. About the exhibit:
PADDY CAMPANARO’s IN TENSE includes 2D and 3D work in several media and materials.

She has had work in both solo and group gallery shows in Los Angeles since the early '90s at Studio Raid, POST, Miller Durazo, Irvine Art Center, and others. Paddy especially enjoys being in alternative space shows like artists Michael Arata’s and Mark Dutcher’s forward thinking One Night Stand group shows at the Farmer’s Daughter Motel on Fairfax Ave.

Paddy has also read her poetry at many venues in Los Angeles over the years especially here where she’s read as a featured reader, at opens, marathon book readings, and special events. Under Pant is a two-volume chapbook of her poetry and Subjects Matter is a book of interviews with accompanying original portraits of eight Los Angeles-based artists. Singer/songwriter ROD SMEAR is included in the book as is poet ELLYN MAYBE, RODEO FOR THE SHEEPISH, and photographer MARK SAVAGE, who is well known for his Souls and Passions, The Los Angeles Poets Project.

Lisa Gill is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Literature and author of five books of poetry. Her latest, Caput Nili: How I Won the War and Lost My Taste For Oranges, is a memoir consisting of five essays, 89 poems, MRI brainscans, and illustrations by Kris Mills. This collection recounts what happened when Lisa threatened to hold up the MRI clinic in 2003. While the book takes a hard look at violence, the severity of the subject matter is mitigated with humor and resilience. Joy Harjo writes: “Caput Nili is a powerful testament to the human spirit as it attempts to grow in a field of absurdity. Outrageous, funny, and brilliant!”

BRENDAN CONSTANTINE – Letters To Guns, Birthday Girl with Possum
Brendan Constantine is an ardent supporter of Southern California poetry and one of its most recognized poets. His work has appeared in numerous journals, most notably Ploughshares, Ninth Letter, The Los Angeles Review and new work is forthcoming in Rattle, 2River View, and Verse Wisconsin. His collection, Letters to Guns, was released in February 2009 from Red Hen Press and Birthday Girl with Possum is due to be released by Write Bloody Press in August. SARAH MACLAY – White Bride, Music from the Black Room
Sarah has three books of poetry on Tampa Press. Her poems and criticism appear in APR, Ploughshares, FIELD, The Writer’s Chronicle, Poemeleon, and numerous other spots including Poetry International, where she serves as Book Review Editor. In 2003, her debut book won the Tampa Review Prize for Poetry and she was a finalist for the Blue Lynx Prize. In 2008 she became the founding artistic director of The Third Area: Poetry at Pharmaka, a reading series now running at Frank Pictures Gallery in Santa Monica. She teaches creative writing and literature at Loyola Marymount University, conducts workshops at The Ruskin Art Club, Beyond Baroque and the LMU Extension Summer Workshop Series.

MIA CARLI
Mia graduated from Loyola Marymount University, and is about to start the graduate program at the University of Iowa in the Fall. A poet and musician, she has appeared in venues around the southland and spent time in Greece and Phuket, Thailand as well as Santa Barbara.

Ellyn Maybe Band Fundraiser for Glastonbury on May 28 at 5PM

Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 28th! 5 pm-whenever...

Ellyn Maybe and her band (Paul Bushnell, Robbie Fitzsimmons, Tommy Jordan, Danny Moynahan & Harlan Steinberger) have been accepted into the Glastonbury Festival in England; the world's largest music festival!!! An incredible honor to be sure but a very expensive undertaking.

A beautiful fundraiser has been organized with the very generous help of the Beyond Baroque Foundation and a collaboration with the Sound Affects Art Project. The magical evening will be filled with music, art and (of course) poetry.

Topping off the night will be the renowned monthly Ellyn Maybe Poetry Rodeo in which the Ellyn Maybe Band improvises behind both Ellyn and volunteer poets. Visitors are encouraged to take part in this wonderful collaborative opportunity!

An outdoor concert and BBQ will take place in the early hours of the event (5pm-7pm), featuring acoustic sets by Danny Moynahan, Chloe Pappas and Jen Hirsh. Raffles will take place in between each act giving away an assortment of fun stuff.

Poetry starts inside at 7 pm with the dynamic readings of Amy Schroeder and Elana Karina Byrne followed by the Ellen Maybe Poetry Rodeo at 9 pm.

Music begins outside again with Robbie Fitzsimmons Solo at 10:30 pm and DJ sets by Nelson Marquez and Tsehaie Kidane a.k.a. Liquid Fire Sound System (DJ) M Train.

Throughout the entire event, art supplied by the Sound Affects Art Project will be on display and up for silent auction. The Sound Affects Art Project encourages local artists to find inspiration in music and poetry including the music and poetry of some of the musicians and poets performing. Live artists will also be creating throughout the event and a room will be designated to art-carding, in which art supplies are provided to make and trade "art cards."

Take your poetry to another level, learn a new skill, help Beyond Baroque and remember a Los Angeles Poet on Saturday May 14.

Poet and teacher Laurel Ann Bogen will lead a one-day workshop (11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.) on honing your poetry editing skills. Many writers believe that poems arrive fully formed from the imagination in a single draft. However, just as a nugget of gold can be valuable, in polishing our roughness a nuanced beauty is allowed to shine.

The workshop is open and limited to 15 participants on a first come/first served basis, the cost is $50. All fees received will be donated to Beyond Baroque in memory of Erica Erdman, a long-time (15-year) student in Laurel's Master Class in Poetry, and will be used to fund a project in her name that will be announced at a later time.

Please submit 2 poems to Beyond Baroque with your check no later than May 1st for consideration. Mark your envelop Erica Erdman Workshop and mail your application to Beyond Baroque, 681 Venice Blvd., Venice CA 90291.

Venice West and the LA Scene brings out what developed in Southern California among the underground artists and poets during the 50s. It’s the story of the early Ferus, Syndell Studio, Gas House, Venice West Café. Most of all, it’s about the individuals who made it happen - told in the words, images and expressions from those that lived it. The film now has a new soundtrack of compositions by JIMMY Z, THEO SAUNDERS, BEN and SI PERKOFF. Their excellent jazz adds another element of originality to this unique documentary.
The producer, MARY KERR and editor, ELAINE TROTTER will be on hand after the screening for a Q&A session.

Sometimes disturbing, always intriguing, figurative oil paintings of LOUIE METZ juxtapose flawless technical detail with a raw, emotionally charged stimulus. An urbane and unique perspective tempers the work, fusing old world classicism onto an outsider art aesthetic. Sensual, confrontational nudes with emaciated souls recline and hesitate in the foreground of plush, photo-realistic landscapes or darkly psychological tableaus. The recent works of LOUIE METZ have earned him a special distinction among the Los Angeles art community, where he has had numerous shows. Louie is a prolific artist, casting local Silverlake personalities to model as his intense survivors. His subjects are usually offset by anthropomorphic landscapes: a suburban backyard and apartment courtyard, a sweeping vista, all rendered in a way that reflects the subject’s inner psychological reality. “Luckily the models are usually going through some kind of psycho drama,” he says, “which makes it interesting.” There is a traditional aspect to Louie's work that reflects a deep interest in the work of the old masters; however, Louie conveys a classicism without investing the work with a classical style,” I don't usually like contemporary art that looks pretentiously old masterish as I find that its a prevailing tendency for figurative painters to stylize their paintings with too many jokey pop-cultural references and self conscious chiaroscuro." Complexity and straight forwardness, tradition and personal vision, beauty and brutality are issues that conflict in life and art, yet because of their importance to the painter they must be dealt with and synthesized in his work. STACY LANDE was born in Granada Hills, in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles, California. From an early age, she took pride in both stage performance and her art. As a youngster, she would regularly stage variety shows on her family’s front porch. In the late 1970's she was exposed to the explosion of punk rock, via seminal bands such as the Weirdos, the Dead Boys, the Stooges and the Ramones. Lande was formally trained in art at California State University, Northridge. After graduation from art school, she began doing performance art at clubs like Sin-a-Matic and LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions). Lande has painted more than 120 portraits of both men and women in deified and dramatic light. In her book Vicious, Delicious and Ambitious, Sherri Cullision describes Lande as creating "demons and she-gods, hinting at both their ‘phantastical’ pasts and immortual futures.” Lande’s work has been featured in various magazines, including Juxtapoz, Juxtapoz Erotica, Detour magazine, and Petersen’s Hot Rod Deluxe, as well as in the film Gone in 60 Seconds. She has been interviewed on National Public Radio's Airtalk with Larry Mantle. In addition to her own book The Red Box, Lande’s work is also included in lowbrow compilations Vicious, Delicious and Ambitious, and Weirdo Deluxe, by Matt Dukes Jordan (Chronicle Books, 2005). Her work has been seen in solo and group shows in Billy Shire’s La Luz de Jesus Gallery, Los Angeles, and Copro/Nason and Track 16 Gallery at Bergamot Station. Her work appears in collections in Japan, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, and England.

Claudia Licht, Certified Massage Therapist, will be providing Chair Massage on a donation basis before and after the Beyond Baroque event on Friday, March 25, 2011. All proceeds will go for the benefit of Beyond Baroque and its mission of being a community center for the literary arts.

Claudia is certified by the statewide California Massage Therapy Council (CAMTC) and is an active professional member of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA). She has been providing massage therapy since 1998 after taking the national licensing exam as presented by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB) and specializes in providing pain relief utilizing the John F. Barnes Approach to Myofascial Release.

The chair massage will be given in increments of 5 to 10 minutes with a suggested donation of $10 - $20. Clients are fully dressed and will sit in a specially designed chair with no oils or creams being used. The massage chair gives the massage therapist easy access to your neck, shoulders, back, arms, hands and head.

an opportunity for stakeholders to discuss facts and to share information about Prop. 39’s local impact.

The meeting is being held to obtain community feedback and for the VNC board to gauge the range of
perspectives existing on area Co-location & Set-Asides, particularly for parents & teachers of school
children enrolled at Westminster Elementary and Walgrove Elementary. We will discuss the complex
factors & events since 2000’s voter passage of Prop. 39 as a constitutional amendment. We will also talk
about the potential negative effects of Prop. 39’s local implementation, about recent API & enrollment
trends at our local schools (positive & negative), about the two Prop. 39 lawsuits that LAUSD lost and the
apparent ‘gag rules’ that have informally been adopted by the District, LAUSD’s funding crisis and the
loss of federal stimulus funds after this year, & class underutilization concerns at LAUSD. Board member
Steve Zimmer will be present as will be representatives from UTLA & Green Dot. Gary Walker, a reporter
from the Argonaut, will be there to cover the discussion. We expect a large crowd. Please arrive on
time.

The Life of a Beyond Baroque Intern

After working here for nearly a month, I am already smitten with the atmosphere at Beyond Baroque. The friendly and dedicated staff have cultivated an incredible place to absorb the wonders of poetry, and it's truly a pleasure to contribute to this community. Although organizing books and cleaning shelves can be exhausting, the events here are a pleasure to help out with. Before attending these readings, I was unaware that such unique talent existed in my area; as an amateur poet myself, this exposure to local wonders is inspiring and valuable. Hopefully, I can assist the staff in attracting a younger generation of artists to the foundation. If you enjoy the smell of old books, come check us out!

RIP Akilah Oliver

Akilah Oliver has left us. During her time in Los Angles she was a supporter of Beyond Baroque and a frequent reader here. We will miss her.

Akilah was born in 1961 in St. Louis and grew up in Los Angeles. In the 1990’s she founded and performed with the feminist performance collective Sacred Naked Nature Girls. For several years, Akilah lived in Boulder, Colorado, where she raised her son Oluchi McDonald (1982-2003) and was a teacher, activist and beloved member of the community at Naropa University’s Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics. When she resided in Los Angeles Akilah was associated with the Beyond Baroque Literart Arts Center where she gave readings and taught workshops. Recently, in New York City, Akilah taught poetry and writing at The New School, Pratt Insitute and The Poetry Project, where she also served as Monday Night Readings Coordinator in 07-08. Her books include A Toast in the House of Friends (Coffee House 2009) the she said dialogues: flesh memory, a book of experimental prose poetry honored by the PEN American Center’s “Open Book” program, and the chapbooks An Arriving Guard of Angels, Thusly Coming to Greet (Farfalla, McMillan & Parrish, 2004), The Putterer’s Notebook (Belladonna 2006), “a(A)ugust” (Yo-Yo Labs, 2007) and A Collection of Objects (Tente 2010).

Los Angeles-based poet James Berkowitz
to be published in esteemed international publication

LOS ANGELES, CA – (February 21, 2011) – When James Berkowitz, poet, writer and multi-media artist, received word that his poem No Words Were Spoken had been selected by Blood & Honey Review, a new literary magazine supported by the American University of Bosnia and Herzegovina for inclusion in its debut issue (First quarter, 2011), he was elated.

“This will be the first time a poem I have penned will be translated into a foreign language and be published in both the online and print versions of an international literary journal,” offered Berkowitz. “I feel truly honored.”

Blood & Honey Review has a mission to promote a vibrant literary life in the Balkans and at the university by connecting writers and artists from the Balkans to the world - and promoting writers and artists from the world in the Balkans. The publication’s name is derived from the Turkish words Bal, which means Blood and Kan, which means Honey.

Berkowitz received word of his poem’s selection on December 16, 2010 via email from the magazine’s co-editor, Dr. Melvin Sterne. Dr. Sterne is also an Assistant Professor of English at the American University of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Berkowitz chose No Words Were Spoken for submission to Blood & Honey Review for two important reasons.

“The poem has been well received at public readings, such as the December 2010 Venice Art Crawl,” said Berkowitz. “In addition, it is truly personal and fresh, having been written just a few months ago.”

Blood & Honey Review is available online at http://bloodandhoneyreview.com/ and will be available at bookstores throughout the Balkan region and the United States beginning in June.

James Berkowitz is a Los Angeles-based poet, writer and multi-media artist. The Massachusetts native has published two books “The Angels are Watching” (2003) and “Canteen Trumpets at Noon” (1997). His works have appeared in such publications as Pasadena Weekly, Los Angeles Independent Newspaper, The Pacific Grove Press, Creations Magazine and Vision Magazine as well as several newspapers, magazines and online journals. James is currently at work on his third book, a collection of poems and short stories. He is also actively working on several multi-media projects. Those living or visiting the greater Los Angeles area can also find him reading and performing live. James loves the magnificence of nature and its many settings as well as the pulse and stimulation of city streets with awareness of the beauty that springs forth from each.
